The government is taking a step further on its war against spammers as it loses patience regarding New Zealand hotmail email accounts being flooded with unwanted free web mails or junk emails.

Businesses and companies who disregard the new anti-spamming laws are now being alloted with legal warnings from DIA or the Department of Internal Affairs.

Beginning September 2007, it has been prohibited to send email advertisements or text messages within the area of New Zealand without the permission from the recipient. However, many companies are still doing this kind of practice.

In the past year, almost 2000 complaints have been filed with the DIA’s anti-spam unit regarding unwanted free web emails. Unsolicited emails from friends or relatives are not covered by the anti-spamming law as they are not considered to be commercial.

By law, businesses who send out commercial emails via the internet must include an unsubscribe option which allows recipients to remove their name from the mail sites’ directory. This is the reason why most emails sent from different websites now contain an information on how to unsubscribe from their mailing service.

Establishments and websites that run spamming operations or unwanted commercial emails can face penalties of up to $500,000, while individuals can be fined up to $200,000.
