Phishing is a fraud in which the assailant sends an email attempting to be from a respectable financial or eCommerce company. The email commonly uses fear tactics in order to encourage the intended victim into browsing a deceptive website. Once on the website, which usually appears and seems much like the valid eCommerce website, the victim is directed to log-in to their account and type in private financial details such as their bank PIN number, their Social Security number, mother’s maiden name, etc. This information is then secretly sent to the attacker who then uses it to interact in credit card and bank fraud – or outright identity theft. Many of these phishing emails seem to be really authentic. Avoid being a victim.
Do not send chain letters, virus warnings, or junk mail. Always check an established anti-virus web site or your IT section before broadcasting an alarm. If a continuous stream of jokes from a friend annoys you, be honest and ask to be removed from their email address directory.
Learn How To Be Protected from Phishing:
DO NOT send any kind of important info in a hotmail email, which includes:
- Any online password
- Any credit card number
- Anyone’s Social Security number
- Think twice before clicking Reply to All. This usually means your reply will go to everyone who received the original email
- Reply should be used most regularly.
